Skin Rehabilitation Massage Therapy Relieves Contraction of Skin Grafts

Abstract
Contraction of skin grafts presents serious functional and cosmetic concerns, depending on the location and severity although full-thickness skin grafts (FTSG) or combination of Split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) and acellular dermal graft decrease frequency and severity of contraction. Skin Rehabilitation Massage Therapy (SRMT, OJO method) is known to reduce pain, pruritus, contraction, prominance and lymphedema after burn. This study was done to verify the effects of SRMT for contraction of skin grafts after friction burn. Certified nurse specialist performed SRMT on two patients whose knee and calf region were skin grafted, 2 times per a week, and care giver did home care on everyday for 8 months. As contraction was relieved, two patients recovered physical function of lower legs and feet, and could comfortably stand and walk dispersing weight on their whole soles. Heights of hypertrophic scars were reduced from 0.52 cm to 0.27 cm and from 0.56 cm to 0.15 cm, respectively. Observing with Colorimeter, color of skin grafts was confirmed to change in nearly normal skin color. SRMT relieves contraction of skin grafts and improves physical malfunction due to contraction. SRMT reduces hypertrophic scar and hyper-pigmented skin color of patients who were treated with skin grafts. (J Korean Wound Management Soc 2009;5:57-61)
